Hostile mobs not spawning at night?

ive had this world for a while now. mobs arent spawning at night, and in caves, only animals and villagers. its nice, but they have materials i need. its not on peaceful. i havent checked the nether yet. this world was originally 1.12.2 but ive since then updated it to newer versions. help?

It's possible that the moon is completely dark, which makes mobs spawn way less frequently.
