I'm a fairly experienced server owner, but I just can't figure out how to do this. Anyone mind explaining/helping with this problem? I do know that i'd have to buy the domain on the internet (I think) and somehow connect it to the server.

Add an A record in your DNS zones pointing to the IP of your server.
If you have a port and don't want the port in the custom IP, use a SRV record.

Buy a domain and then get an afraid.org account, and then update your domain name servers to point at afraid NS1 + NS2, then set the A records in the afraid control panel, you may also use SRV records if you are not using the default Minecraft port.
