How do I access the Vanilla textures?

I'm interested in making a resource pack for me and my friends. I know how to go into the files and find the .json file I need, but that's where I get stuck. I don't really know how to actually extract the files and use them. Any help is appreciated, even if it's just moral support. The version I want the files from is 1.16.5, if that helps.

HI,

In order to create a 1.16.5 Resource Pack you should focus on the 1.16.5.jar file (not the *.json). Right click the 1.16.5.jar, then extract to "1.16.5\", cut that folder and paste it in a easier to access location. Browse thru that folder ... 1.16.5.jar\assets\minecraft\textures. In the textures folder you will find every single texture you would like to replace or edit (do not rename them). You can also go further with Optifine CIT's and/or CEM's.

Everything else is explained in Icephantom's post.
