How do i make a custom home screen to minecraft?

I am trying to make custom buttons in a client (that isnt hacked) that are for singleplayer, multiplayer etc. but im not sure how to do so. What i want to do is make a square button with a custom texture and no text. I don't believe this is possible with a resource pack either and i would like it to be part of the client im making.
