How do I mod in beta without MultiMC?

I was wondering how to mod in beta without using MultiMC. I know that the .minecraft folder looks a bit different now, so I don't know if it's even possible, but if it is, then please tell me. I have seen other posts like this one, which have gotten answers, but I try to follow the instructions they give, and it doesn't work. Does anybody know how to do this?
