I used to run some servers quite awhile ago, but now for some reason I can't even think were to start. Now I'm asking all this because I'm working again and interested in running a semi-large server on the side.
Used to be I would run one of my dedicated server and a couple of people would join. Usually ended up being a nice server that just slowly crept away from the front page never to be seen again.
I'm thinking maybe instead of buying from a company that it would be easier for me to host my own from my dedicated server, but it does end up costing more when less people use it and I have to keep it on 24/7 because of time-zones.
So are those sites trying to sell me server hosting worth buying? I can easily buy an offshore host for $0.99 cents a month that would most likely hold up to 5 players and for $5.99 possibly up to 20.
Also where do I get reliable admin staff for time-zones where me and friends wouldn't be able to look over it? I don't really want to just hire people I know nothing about over a forum no matter how impressive they look. is there somewhere I can get a real community manager?
Forums and websites as well... I know nothing about either, who do I buy from, what do I host on and how do I advertise it?
Advertising is the last thing I could need help with, getting word about that the server has started. How would I go about that? Once again I don't want to spam these forums or any others, I'd prefer legit advertisements, shout outs etc.
So come on server professionals, I'm looking to start something fairly large! (not just MineCraft) Basically if you have a good enough looking portfolio for things like advertising, community management, server hosting and website development.
When I say not just MineCraft, I mean I'm looking to start a community with many different servers, Gmod game-modes for example. (also lookign for anyone with experience in these)
I'd prefer users over the age of 16 only to contact me if your willing to seriously start something. (I.E invest time, commitment)
Of course I'll fund everything unless you want to become a founding member/co-owner who has a say in what happens in the server when everything is being set up and when it's finished.

My host offers a VPS at a pretty decent rate. I've had up to 15 people on (split across two server instances) on a 2GB setup with 20tps on both servers.
Of course you can install a webserver on a VPS too so it could cover all your bases in one.

I'd go with beastnode.com very good servers and decently priced
There are many tutorials on how to fully set up a server on Youtube. I would take a look there and if your still stuck come back and ask again. Hope this helps
