How to LAN (please sticky)
Alright, here goes.
LAN isn't for over the internet connections.
Your friends have to be on the same network as you. A network in most cases is limited to a single access point like your WiFi router or mcdonald's free WiFi connection. If you connect two computers to each other with an Ethernet cable, and some know-how, your devices can interact just like you would with someone over the internet.
Don't give up hope yet. You can still form a LAN without the same access point, after all you are both on the internet.
What you have to do is set up and externally host a VPN from your computer. What this means is you basically make a hole in your firewalls that prevent people from interacting with your machine's data. In this case you are cutting a direct path to a VPN you have on your computer and are connected to.
If hosted right, others will be able to access your VPN but not the other data on your machine. Windows' native networking tools offer the ability to do all of this for every edition. You may have to fiddle with your routers ports and windows firewall, but it can be done, though this is not the quickest way to externally host a VPN, but it will work!

Create a user profile for each of your friends connecting to the VPN, and then give them the user and pass. With an internet connection (and a little luck) your friends will be able to connect to your LAN address.

Using a VPN setup in the manner shown above...
Connect to your Default Gateway IP with your browser like you would a website.
Default Gateways are found under network connection details.
you'll be prompted to log-in. Passwords are generally your wifi passcode. User is almost always 'Admin' by default.
Look for a section on ports or port forwarding.
Forward Port 1723 TCP to your IPv4. IPv4 are your Default Gateway with an identification string on the end of it instead of 1.
Some routers have an automatic setting for PPTP (port 1723 connections.) This setting is best for what we are doing, so use it if you have it.
