Use your imagination. Build what you want to build. If it doesn't looks good at first, improve it. Try out different things. Go OCD about everything you do and it eventually will look good.

Try making things from pictures from the internet, then mixing up designs into something kinda new. When you get better, try making something completely new in creative, then use schematica to have a floating 3d guide in whatever server.
Im like the borg of designs, i take a little of everything i like and combine that style with my own style, often resulting in good buildings. I can link to some good things to use if you want.

I have lots but here's my top 5
5.Build a base first trying to build a house? make a cube/ rectangular prism
4.When in doubt consult the interwebs
3.Don't make nude people unless they explode
3 and a quarter. No toilets
2. Test yourself. What are you good at are you good at adventure maps or Pixel Art or Skyscrapers the world is infinite.
1. If you fail BLOW UP EVERYTHING honestly this lets you vent frustion and lets you clear your mind. Without a clear mind you will think about minor details, Fou=cus on the main project then do details

Watch a lot of "Technical" YouTubers. I've become a pretty good builder since I started watching EthosLab.
They can also teach you other such, stuff as redstone mechanics.

I agree with Hannah, it takes practice. Also, with what you are trying to build, it helps to look at other people's projects and see how they approached it. You can learn a lot from looking at other people's projects. I too was in a similar situation about a year ago. I couldn't really build the things the way i wanted to very well, and i eventually stumbled onto this site. And the other thing is that i downloaded MCEdit, which allowed me to have greater speed and control over what i build. I find it much easier than building in creative, as i can edit things a lot faster, easily see the project as a whole (which minecraft can be limited on), and i find it easier to put in much more detail. I hope this helps.

Just keep trying and trying make sure to use different types of blocks different shades and colors always make nice builds.

If your trying to do a building or something, you want to be detailed as possible.
Thats my tip.

pixel art and statues won't really get you anywhere in building, but ryan, try experimenting with different block combos and different shapes. For me its stuff like glowstone, stone brick, lapis block, light blue wool, dark blue will, cobble, and stone
as with nether brick. find your combination of blocks then try building different shapes. Not literally different shapes though.. :/

I think the main key here is practice. You can't just wake up someday and build something epic on a whim. You need to experiment what you're good at and what you're not so good at.
That's how I figured out that I'm best at making pixel art and statues of people.

Try sketching out your ideas freely on a notepad or paper, and then draw it out as blocks on graph paper

Go to tinkercad and make the model there and download it as schematic. You can not use this for contests though/

One thing you can do with this is get a mod like schematic to see a plan for it and know what you need to place where. Here is a link. http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/146 ... chematica/
