To run a normal, not 24/7 server. Its free but does require portfowarding. A little bit of a tricky task so some people go with paying for server hostings. You can do that on certain sites. Just type in "Minecraft server hosting" on your browser and you'll find one. Or you can vewi this example one I have:

Redstone host: (One of the more expensive ones) http://www.redstonehost.com/
Treepuncher: (REALLY expensive, quality is good though) http://www.treepuncher.com/
And servercraft: Cheap but will have lag: http://servercraft.co/
it can cost anywhere from like 10-?$ a month for a hoster. yes it costs less the less slots but the ram which is how fast the server will run will go up with each slot usually or you have to buy more.
The less slots you order the less money you pay
