I want to play a big mod pack in a server with 3 other friends. I've been researching a lot but I found that there are different opinions on how much RAM I need to make it work smoothly.
Some people say that 1 GB is enough for just a few amount of players and a mod pack, but some websites say that 1 GB is only enough for vanilla.
Some people also say that 2 GB should be the minimum, but some websites say that 2 GB can only handle 10 mods, meanwhile we want to play the big mod packs (like Crazy craft, RAD pack, etc.)
Servers often say that 4 GB is the recommended to play most mod packs but if I compare to what people say, 4 GB just sounds like overkill. Is this a marketing tactic to squeeze money out of inexperienced people? I don't want to get a server that's so strong to the point that I'm wasting money, but I also don't want to get a server that is so slow that its unplayable.
If any of you have experience on renting servers to play mod packs, I would appreciate the insight!

it depends on how many mods and what the mods are and what version of the game, but usually i recomend 4gb for 60+ mods on 1.7.10 and bellow then 6-8gb for 1.8+ with a minimum of 8gb for 1.12.2 with the same count and type of mods
a good rule of thumb is to go with 2gb + 1gb for every 20-25 mods loaded on the client not how many are in the mods folder
Alright, thanks for the reply! :)
