How much RAM does a non-hosted server need?

I host my own server straight from my desktop. My whole PC have 6GB RAM and the server is using 3072MB. (3GB) I am willing to give up my PC's speed to make it non-laggy for my beautiful players & friends, but still want it to be non-laggy for myself, How much RAM do you suggest, and again, My PC has 6GB and server is using 3GB.

Well i am running a server with a friend and our server has 3gig's 40+ players and has a world database fully running and the server can have up to 60 players 3 gig's can hold alot you should be fine.
