Hello i have just got a pc for running servers. It only have 2Gb ram so i can only host 1 or 1.5Gb ram server. But if i wanted to make this 24/7 how much power would it use up (cost on power bill) i know alot about servers and have 3 hosted ones but theres in use and i want to host my own. And is there any risks to my network that i would not be able to stop?

Thanks!

Server i have specs:
Dell optilpex gx620 desktop
p4 3ghz 200gb h/d 2gbram runs Vista (i have ran a server from this before just wanting to know about making it 24/7 before it was priivate not public)

Back to your original post, the power cost shouldn't be anything more than what a normal computer runnings costs. Network wise hosting on your home internet is never a good idea like these guys have been saying. If you choose to whitelist even, if someone knows the IP and wants to be a troll it will boot your server off and you won't even be able to connect unless you are going through localhost.

If you have prohosting, why ask this question? You mentioned doing 24/7 for public use. If that's the case, most shared hosting will not even offer DDos protection, which you'll have to find someone for that. For hosting and a deflection proxy you're looking at $30 roughly.

I would highly discourage it as home hosting a public server can lead to multiple problems.

Firstly regarding costs, buying a suitable dedicated machine to run public servers will cost at least $1,000. And that is without taking into consideration the costs of powering this machine 24/7, and your ISP internet fees.

Secondly regarding more serious issues, running a server from home can lead to serve security issues as you can easily get attacked by DDOSers, which will take down the internet for your whole house. Your ISP (Internet service provider) most likely also does not regard game server hosting as normal use, and therefore you can end up with heavy fees for running such a server from your home, and even get your internet cut off. All in all, costing you more money, and resulting in server down time for your players. On top of this, you will be putting heavy strains on your power, which can also cause short circuits, resulting in server down time, and possibly damaging your actual machine. You also have to realize that your ISP will not provide fast enough internet for you to host a server, which will also result in a laggy server for your players.

So overall, home hosting a public server is not a good idea. You will not save any money and it can cause a lot of problems for both yourself and your house hold. Instead I suggest you look into renting a dedicated machine or multiple VPS from OVH. They offer very low prices for some great specs and if you have the technical knowledge to set them up right you can fit hundreds and thousands of players on their machines. Take a look at their ranges and see what best fits your budget and needs: http://www.ovh.co.uk/

Or if you are looking for a smaller server to start out with I would suggest going tiwh McProHosting: https://mcprohosting.com/

Aah okay, so you are looking to host your website or other peoples website from a home machine? Well then almost all of the same issues I states above still apply, people can still DDoS you, you internet connection will not be fast enough to handle large amounts of visitors, you internet connection will make the website very slow. Plus you would have to pay for power, which can be pretty pricey if you leaving a computer on 24/7. My advise would still be not to do it.
