Alright, what's up everyone? I've got a question. Now I've played Minecraft for a few months now and love it!!! But the one thing that always bothers me is that I don't have my own server. I mean, how do other people have servers like this: Example play.whatever.com?
I've come across several websites that let me pay for servers but it still ends up at an IP address like this 123.456.789.123:25565 but I don't want it to show my IP address, and I want it something like play.whatever.com so I can just type it out. Also I want it to be free, so I don't have to pay anything...
My friend recommended me a site called Beastnode and Treepuncher but they dont work because I don't have a credit card and I need it to be free. I mean think of it, how do Beastnode and Treepuncher and those other people run their servers? Do they pay bigger companies or something? If I could get a server for free it would be best for it to be 24/7 but if it's not possible, still that's fine at least I can get a server.
Basically my question is how to get a free Minecraft server because I do not want to pay any money, how do I get it, do I set it up myself? And how do I get a website like play.whatever.com instead of an IP address? thanks

Hi DtigerCSK, thanks for your helpful reply. Unfortunately I had to study for a school exam over the past few days. Anyway, I set up my own server and can connect to it from my own computer. (To be honest the server thing looks pretty cool, it looks likes I'm a pro hacker) Of course I did read your entire post and I see that you did mention what to do if this happens, so I tried that.
I've tried what you said but I'm only able to get to the step where you have the default gateway. When I try entering my username and password from that website, it doesn't work. Even though there are a lot of time, I've taken the time and tried everyone single possible username and password combination, and none of them work.
So basically, I have a BELKIN router and I don't know the username and password to log into it. I've tried all the passwords there are but none of them work, it just says incorrect password and access denied. I'm not sure if this is my computer or something to do with it, but it's been acting up lately. There is a reset button on the back of my router that can be pushed with a paper clip but I'm not sure if it will wipe out my Internet and WiFi, because I really need those working and they're important.
Do you think I should try pressing the reset button like it suggests in the manual or is there are username and password I should try first?

Download either the Vanilla, Bukkit, or Spigot server jar. Vanilla is just pure minecraft, Bukkit supports a variety of mods and plugins, and Spigot is a modification of Bukkit to be more optimized. To run the server, create a .bat file by first creating a .txt file and then saving it as a .bat. Check Bukkit's wiki for a startup script, you can adjust the server jar name to use other server jar types as well as the allocated memory to the server. After you do that, you can edit any server configurations and add things you want such as maps, plugins, etc. Restart the server to make changes.
After you have done the above, players not on your network won't be able to join, so you will have to port forward. You can see Bukkit's port fowarding tutorial, but port forwarding differs among different types of routers. After you port forward players will be able to join your server.

Thanks for all the replies everyone, but I want to point out that I am specifically looking for a free server. I already know how I can buy hosts but I am looking to make one for free.
Could you explain this more? I have a good Internet connection and a $2000 beast gaming computer so that's not really a problem. But how do I actually set up the server? I already tried doing a LAN server and it works perfectly but people have to be on the same Wifi as me or else it doesn't work. Is there some way to run a server on a regular computer that's not a server?
DtigerCSKThe only way to get a free server would be hosting it on your own computer or hardware. You won't be able to make a larger server unless you have decently fast internet to support a larger playerbase. Also, you'll need decent-ish hardware to run a server.

Plus when your server is laggy, you can just point blame at your host!
I love to point the blame elsewhere lol ....but seriously just get a hosting company places like hosthorde.com are good and cheep depending on what you want and how many people you want..... other places have cheaper servers for less space and things like that

Just remember that no matter what, anyone who knows how to use a ping command can get your IP.
Unless you use a proxy server.
Which also costs money . If you are serious about wanting a server, trust me when I say that paying $5 a month is MUCH better than doing it yourself!

DtigerCSKOnce you get a domain just set an A record pointing to your server's IP.
Just remember that no matter what, anyone who knows how to use a ping command can get your IP. Take google for example:
master@JT-ThinkPad-T60 ~ $ ping google.com
PING google.com (173.194.46.32) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from ord08s10-in-f0.1e100.net (173.194.46.32): icmp_req=1 ttl=54 time=45.0 ms
64 bytes from ord08s10-in-f0.1e100.net (173.194.46.32): icmp_req=2 ttl=54 time=42.5 ms
^C64 bytes from ord08s10-in-f0.1e100.net (173.194.46.32): icmp_req=3 ttl=54 time=41.4 ms
--- google.com ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 3 received, 0% packet loss, time 2002ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 41.410/42.983/45.035/1.518 ms
So Google's IP Address is 173.194.46.32
You need to purchase a domain from a domain registrar. .com domains usually are around $10/year, so you will need to pay for a domain. If you want you can use a sub-domain, they're usually free. Once you get a domain just set an A record pointing to your server's IP.
Also, you won't be finding any free servers anytime soon, they require money for the electricity, internet, hardware, etc. Server hosts usually rent servers from other companies(smaller hosts), but bigger hosts may own their hardware and stuff. The only way to get a free server would be hosting it on your own computer or hardware. You won't be able to make a larger server unless you have decently fast internet to support a larger playerbase. Also, you'll need decent-ish hardware to run a server.

Look into Dynamic DNS (Domain Name Server). http://freedns.afraid.org/ is a GREAT one, and you can find clients to run on your computer to keep your IP Updated with the Domain Name. Problem is, anyone who knows anything about computers can get the IP Address without much problem. The only way to keep your IP from being out there is to pay a host.
