How to optimize minecraft to fit in a 1080p display

Well, i have a laptop pluged to an external monitor, when i start minecraft the resolution of the game is 720p (which is the resolution of the laptop) instead of 1080p, (the resolution of the external monitor)
How can i play the game in 1080p?

If you don't have it in full screen, then you can just stretch it to the size of your screen or even just drag it to the top to maximize it on that screen. It'll still have the top title bar but that's how I've always played MC, personally.
