i updated my minecraft to 1.3.1 yesterday and i wanted to try the LAN single player with my brother who is in the same house and the same network. he hit open to LAN and publish. i can see it under my multiplayer screen at the bottom but when i click on it it just takes a long time then says connection timed out. and i tried it multible times. also when i tried putting my single player map to LAN my brother could not see it under multiplayer like i saw his.
any ideas?

It's probably because you didn't actually BUY Minecraft. I seriously think if you don't pay, then you shouldn't play. Don't be cheap. Not everything in this world is free

Try Force Updating. It happened to me, but after force updating it worked. Are you premium? If not, I don't think you can open to LAN. Also, if it doesn't work, try Hamachi. Have him connect to your network in it, then have him try to connect. If this doesn't help, let me know.
hamachi no work for me and my brother i ahve the same problem you might need to portford for it to work.
portforwarding wont do anything if you're on the same wifi connection and i think he problem could be you cant join lan games unless you're premium
