Inability to Play Private Multiplayer
Hello. I have been trying to set up some - ANY - form of private online play with my girlfriend, and after two days of trying everything we're desperate. First, I tried to set up and host my own server with the .jar information provided by Mojang and following a comprehensive video guide online. For that method I even did all necessary port forwarding, at least I believe so, and we simply couldn't get it to work. We eventually discovered that Himachi is commonly used to create LAN servers. We decided to try it because it seemed like a much easier method. Following directions from minecraft's own gamepedia, we set up Hamachi and our LAN connection over the VPN still didn't work. We finally decided to google the error message associated with all our failed connections. That brought us to instructions on how to let Java communicate through our firewall. We tried to follow those confusing directions to the best of our ability, but that still didn't work. Now we are confused and desperate, not to mention unsure how to reverse any changes we made to our devices or networks that might have been incorrect. Can anyone help us figure out why Hamachi doesn't work for LAN, or at least any way to play multiplayer together?
Some important info:
- The error code we kept getting was "io.netty.channel.abstractchannel$annotatedconnectexception"
- The sever that I created on my device worked for me through direct connect, and I could even use commands (such as to op myself) properly, so I doubt the issue was in my setup, though it's possible
- I have Google Wifi, which makes my network a little bit tedious to deal with. First I port forwarded my device and port on just the Google Wifi, then realized I might need to port forward the same port from the Google Wifi to the actual router. Neither step fixed it (though I'm only 90% sure I did both steps correctly)
- Over Hamachi we were pretty sure but not positive that we were connected to the VPN properly, because it was our first time using it.
- We're pretty sure only my device has the power to host, but we're desperate enough that if someone has a solution involving her hosting, we'll take it.
- We both added "java.exe" to apps allowed through the firewall. The guides we found didn't simplify anything enough to let us know if this was the right app/program/thing to click on. (Firewalls are confusing).
Thank any and all of you for whatever help you can give. Feel free to ask questions, obviously. I know this is a lot of info.

Hi,
I've hosted servers on Hamachi loads and when I get it to work, it often doesn't breaks itself again. I'd honestly just cut out the hassle and buy a cheap 1gb server. I've recently started using https://gamehost.network/minecraft and they have been really good so far. Only other host Ive used is https://nitrous-networks.com/ but im not a fan of their control panel.

Thank you! It's been such a hassle - five days of my life learning more than I ever thought I'd know about how the internet, servers, ports, etc. works - that we are considering getting a cheap server. We're looking into a few last leads about possible problems, but if none of them work out we might buckle. Thank you for the recommendations!
