I been looking for the simplest iron farm - even tried my hand at it. In the wiki it says the golems can spawn in a 16x13x16 area based on the villagers location.
1. Why do these guys build them so high (vs on the ground, I thikn I saw one that was on the ground)
2. How can they make them so small if the above area is so big?
thanks for shedding some light on this.

They make them in the air so that the iron golems spawn in the spawning platform, which is crucial because there is a limit. If they built it on the ground, it would be much harder to control where they spawn.
interesting. so is there a specific spot for the spawning platform and what is the minimum size of this platform? Is it recommended above or below the villagers? I built two so far.
1. Uses a zombie - which seems to produce ingots MUCH faster
2. Uses villagers only, does not seem to produce much ingots
after watching many, seems height is an important factor, but still have not deduced what the minimum size the spawn platform should be
Thanks again..!!

Yeah, you need a zombie to frighten them into spawning iron golems. Most designs i see have the spawning platform above the villagers, and I think that's because its closest that way. I don't know how big it has to be to spawn them, but will look into it.
OK been experimenting a LOT!! HAHA
So as far as building in the air, it is because (just my theory so far - someone correct me) the golems do not suffer fall damage, but they still need a place to spawn near the villagers - within the 16 x 6 x 16. It seems that when I place it in the air, they seem to spawn just about anywhere there is a platform (got it down to a 8x8 and they still seem to spawn there), when I have it on the ground they will sometimes miss the platform and land on the ground. Currently I am experimenting with how small can i get a farm to work.
Does this theory sound right? According to various sources.. it seems to work..

That makes sense, I'm no expert but I believe it.
it might seem i'm kind of "obsessing" over this, but I have noticed that the materials needed to create this (since majority of them on tutorials are done on creative), are excessive for a survival player that, by the time your done, you could have built whatever it was you were making the "farm" for LOL
the iron one is the most material intensive, so I am spending some free-time to see just how far minimal I can make one that is feasible - and worthwhile - for a survivalist.
This one is REALLY close with the exception of the magma and some redstone mats. Still big though LOL
