You need Winrar or 7Zip. (Winrar is preferred, and the link will take you to a direct download.)
When you have one of them (Or even something else), right click minecraft.jar and select "open as." (If it's not just a button, and it opens a little menu on the side, see if Winrar (or your .zip opening programme) is on the menu. If it's not, select "Choose default programme) If Winrar isn't on the list (AFTER selecting "Choose default programme), select "browse..." That should take you to a directory called "Programme Files." Scroll down this list and search for your .zip-opening programme, then double click it. (If you cannot find the programme, let me know, and I'll help you find it.) You'll be taken back out into the "open with" menu - Click on "Other Programmes," if it's not alread expanded, and then double click the programme that you've just added to the list.
It'll now open .minecraft with that programme, by default, and not try to open it with Java, anymore. If it happens to do this again, just follow the above directions, and make sure that the box in "Open with," is checked. It will say: "Always use the selected programme to open this kind of file."
