Minecraft was running smoothly, at around 60 FPS. Now, its around 20 FPS! I haven't done anything that would ruin it! I am also running optifine. If anyone could help, it would be appreciated.

Are you by any chance using anything AMD? I remember back in 1.3 when I was playing minecraft on my laptop with an AMD cpu and graphics, optifine would cause more lag.

Thanks for the tips, just so you know, I have modified all of my settings to decent ones. Also, modifying the chunk loading gave me a slight FPS increase. The problem is, its still unplayable. When the window is not maximised, its playable. But I can't play Minecraft without it being maximised, because its really, really hard to see when unmaximised. Any solution to this?

It might have to do with how you set chunk loading. Just using the chunk loading as default is usually best. I have tried multicore before but it glitches some chunks. Another thing that really helps is turning on Mipmapping. Make sure chunk updates is set to 1. Turning on fast math for me also boosted my fps by 20 or 30 so you could try that. Sometimes turning off advanced open gl helps too

If you're playing on a server, it might be the server lagging, not you. Also, if you don't configure the optifine settings to fit your computer specs it can cause more lag.

Your best option is to buy a newer computer. one preferably with a good Graphics card rather than one built into the motherboard. Come 1.8 You will be required to use a GFX Card that supports OpenGL 1.3 which many onboard graphics cards do not support.

I may have solved the problem, but it might happen again.

I opened chrome when playing Minecraft, closed chrome, now I have my FPS back. I noticed that I was experiencing lag when playing The Walls on Hypixel, but that was solved when I made my mip-map levels 0, using optifine.

I've noticed that my video settings will be reset when I use optifine sometimes, set your settings again.

Alright, well this happened to me once. Most likely thing is you have a virus slowing your computer in general. Of that isn't it try deleting your .minecraft folder than reinstalling it. But most likely you have a virus, check your running processes and if anything looks out of the ordinary find the file location, then delete the file, and all the sub files. Wow, 20fps. That's really low. Not. I get 12. Deal with it.

When your computer can handle more than what it is running, then you deal with it, and that is his case, so just because your computer sucks, doesn't mean others have to suffer.

If it happens on all minecraft worlds try:

Restarting Computer
Running Disk Defrag
Running Disk Cleanup
Checking to make sure your RAM was not jostled loose

if it was just all of a sudden, maybe your world is spawning too many entities. the other day i was making an ant farm and i did not think at all about how many to actually spawn. i ended up placing over 20 ant nests and my framerate, which is usually at a steady 100, was at 5.

Hello, What version are you playing on?

If its 1.7 then you might of accidentally pressed Super Secret Settings.

Try setting your graphics to FAST, Smooth tiling off and lower your render distance, Performance should be at the maximum(Unlimited if you have optifine)

Advanced OpenGL Should be set to ON and keep the Anisotropic Filtering off

Hope this helps!

Optifine is fine. Thats what helped me get to around 60 FPS. Also, Game Booster ain't no good. It actually just slows your games down... ;_;

All of those settings were already on. I am using 1.7. I know an easy way to check if you are using Secret Settings, all you have to do is press F3, and see if you can see something about a shader.

Thanks for the help everyone.
