So, I've been trying to play Minecraft 1.8.4 with my friend via LAN. We enter the right IP address and the right port, but whenever we try to connect, it connects for a while, then either says that the connection timed out or the connection refused. We both tried with our firewall off, but it still didn't work. How can I get it to work?

one way to fix this without port forwarding is both of you install a free program called hamachi, that way you both can play lan without downloading the server jar or anything.
just install hamachi invite your friend to your hamachi network then create a lan world.
ask your friend to direct connect to the hamachi ip (It will tell you when you open hamachi)
and there you go.
+the bonus of playing hamachi lan is that you both can install mods on your computers and you both can play them in the lan server, to do that in an actual server you have to do alot of work.

Well to do that you'd need to port forward so you wouldn't be running LAN anyway, and it would need to be the multiplayer server jar file.
Point is you can't play LAN unless you are connected to the same LAN server (being the same router or Ethernet connection or whatever)
devTravisPersonRoboBearParilAre you two in the same room connected to the same router?
No, we're connected to different routers in different places.
Then you can't play on Local Area Connection, you need to be on the same router.
