Hello! I downloaded a map this evening that I am very excited to play. I put it in the Saves folder and unzipped it using PeaZip. When I loaded up Minecraft and checked my list of worlds in Singleplayer it was not in the list. I tried restarting Minecraft, and extracting everything in the download by myself. Nothing has worked. I've experienced this issue before, but I've yet to solve it. I would really love some help with this matter.

The folder was not identically named but I placed it in the Saves folder anyway. The map is now working as long as I use 1.8 or earlier.

As silverbrick said.
Once you unzip the map open the non Compressed folder and you should see an identically named folder. Put that folder in saves. Should work as long as you do that. Version should have nothing to do with it unless it is a major version difference.
You need to check the version and take out the map folder inside
