I know that this may be a hassle, but try re installing minecraft, and if that doesn't work, reinstall Java.

Well, old beta and alpha versions tend to have many bugs.
That's all I know.
Beta 1.7.3 is actually very stable.

Try deleting .minecraft (AFTER DOING ALL THE BACKUPS NECESSARY!!!!) then retrying.
