Minecraft is dying?

Do you notice the ever declining population of people online? It seems to be more and more of people hacking, cheating, begging for positions of power, than just playing the game.

How many of you out there running a server are seeing the same thing?

Bottom line: the "real Minecrafters", that is, the ones who play because it's a fun game, and not to ruin everybody else's fun, have their niches and tend to stay there.

So no, I don't think Minecraft is dying. I just think that all of the good players have found homes. Well, most of them, at least.

I think you're absolutely right with this. When Minecraft started out, it was a not-well-known underground game. Who plays games like that? The dedicated and mature computer video gamers do. Now that Minecraft has gotten big, it attracts much more of your 'average' gamer, who is usually less dedicated and possibly less mature (and these end up outnumbering the dedicated players).
While it's unfortunate that this happens, it's the natural evolution of a game from small to large. And, hey, if Minecraft had never gotten popular I never would have heard about it in the first place!

When I first started my new server, Yeah i got people asking for power, but that's a basic thing, Luckily I had already planned this out to have 3 OPS and 2 Mods.
Then when we started with our Equestria map, we had a Fakedew try and get op. It was funny trolling him.
Then we went to our Camp Half-Blood map, got a bunch of hackers and breaking rules.

I've been noticing that people are not really just being stupid. Just being out-strait arseholls.

I think the only real way to combat this is a whitelist. Requiring people to go through a registration on a forum, then submit an application is enough to deter 80% of the garbage.

Yeah I'm trying to get a food fourm software to do this.

And the whitelist we only use when we're doing adventure maps. Cause we reeaaallyy didn't need our members running around while we did the Yogolympics.

Minecraft is a fad. Im not sure how much longer its going to be popular. I guess its time instead to close the doors, and start a whitelist.

It has definitely fallen off its peak. I couldn't imagine how release could have gone worse, capsizing the way it did in the wake of G.O.T.Y. Skyrim, and then following it up with the difficulties of Minecon and Yogscastgate. Throw those in with the fact that every update after release has broken the game time and again, forcing SP and MP alike to re-do maps, and it's a wonder anyone still plays.

That said, pinning terrible players on a decline is ridiculous. We were blaming the rise for the influx of terrible players all last year. Terrible players have been with us since the beginning and will endure until the last Minecraft player uninstalls the game from his or her computer.

I agree... All I get is spammers to join my server and say random junk on how bad the server sucks when they play maybe 30 seconds. Then they go out and grief everything they can get their hands on and find it funny.

You know not all 8-12 year olds are like that?
I have I think two 9-10 year olds on my server and they don't ask CAN I HAVE OP every second. They just build and be happy, no griefing or hacking.

I just found out the other day that a good portion of my new players were 12-17 year olds.. I think I lucked out and got the quietest bunch of brats on Minecraft!

People who ask for OP, I usually either mute them or change their prefix to say FakeAdmin which is hilarious. we just troll the crap out of people who are causing grief, we actually have an entire world dedicated to destroying their dreams. That might be keeping my admins sane actually, I give them tons of stuff to mess with people with. whether it is freezing them, rocketing them, blowing them up, spawning 200 ghasts/creepers right on top of them, renaming them to embarrassing names, throwing explosive pigs at them. You just have to let the kids know who is boss, and is that fails use /ban -g

Being a server moderator, i have been confronted by several instances where we have power hungry 8-11 year olds come on and whine about how stupid we are, how stupid the server is, when they havent been on for even a minute.
When it comes to older crowds when it comes to whining about shit that isnt true, they are most likely handicapped in some way/shape/form (If somone found that offensive i meant no offence, im trying to make a point)

These children range from 8 years old to 11 Years old, they are probably spoiled with an Iphone, 60 inch flatscreen TV, etc. They think they can have whatever they want, when they want it. We usually mute them until they stop raging, then we unmute them, if they rage, well kiddies, they get banned. I dont put up with crap like this.

Hope this info helped.

I think the issue with Minecraft is that there are so many younger kids playing. I mean you used to see TONS of people 17-18+ playing but you rarely get 5-6 on a Public server full of 40 anymore. Most of all those kids come in with the Expectation of OP and Admin and Creative that it's almost not worth the typing to tell them no.. Just have a AutoAnnouncer or something. I personally just truck through it and kick the squeaky kids asking for that stuff.

I agree with you it's that time of year where the exams kick in. People who play legit will be revising unlike the younger players who just want the perks for nothing!

I've actually been away for a few months doing training while the rest of the staff ran my server - during that time, it's expanded greatly and there actually seems to be less begging for ranks, grief, and the like.

We seem to be doing fine for now... but you never know, after all, the server is only alive because donations keep everything running and our players keep coming back. This can always change.

Ive had a talk with the rest of my staff, were going to make the server private and move to a much smaller machine. Were just going to collect the good people we have had over the years, and whitelist.

Kinda sucks really, to go from 50 slots public to 15 private. But there is no reason to keep dragging it along. Its no fun explaining to people that can't spell how to sethome. More than 3 times in 5 minutes.

I agree. I uses to play mc everyday and visit PMC but now I mostly see posts that are spam. Not all the time. On my server people beg for power and threaten to write a bad review if I don't give them.

I think what's happening is that you have the die-hard MC fans who either play single player, or have their own favourite servers where they play. They don't necessarily get involved in the forums for the exact reasons you posted above: begging, whining, hacks and cheats.

I don't play any outside servers. I rarely invite anyone onto my family server. But I still play MC, I write about MC, I try out different mods and play them to death... But I've already said all the stuff I've wanted to in the past. I'm willing to help out newbies, but not the type that beg/whine/cheat. So... I don't do a lot of helping these days. Pity.

^this.

A while ago, I found a server that I really liked, so I played that server alone, and had a grand old time. When I grew tired of Minecraft multiplayer, I left and played solo for a while and had some fun. Then I tried IndustrialCraft. Then I found a new server and stayed there for months. Now I've decided to move on and go solo again, and experiment with making Let's Plays.

Bottom line: the "real Minecrafters", that is, the ones who play because it's a fun game, and not to ruin everybody else's fun, have their niches and tend to stay there.

So no, I don't think Minecraft is dying. I just think that all of the good players have found homes. Well, most of them, at least.

And yeah, not all 12-year-olds are stupid. Just most of them. Hey, I was 12 not long ago (but long enough ago that I remember listening to N*SYNC while playing Pokemon cards and feeding my Tamagotchi between turns). If you get a well-behaved kid on your server, you're lucky. Be nice to him, he's a rare find. The proverbial diamond amidst lava, if you will.

I think you hit the nail on the head. All my regulars have stopped playing the game really. The only people that come in are the ones we don't want coming in. It seems pretty pointless to spend 70 bucks a month to run a server for 8 people.
I may just shutdown after a good 2 year run.
