Minecraft lags

Minecraft has had constant lagging while in a world or on a server. I am using a Dell Inspiron on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. It does not lag for about one second when I first load the world up, but then lagging varies from about .25 seconds to about 2 seconds. I have allocated Minecraft 512 MB memory.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What model Inspiron are you using? You're not providing enough information, in case you didn't realize Dell makes a lot of Inspirons. Also tell us the FPS you get before it starts lagging and after it starts lagging.
