Minecraft Server Logo [1.7.2]

A quick question about the new server logo feature, I do know that the format required is .png, but does it support .gifs? My friend insists that .gif format can be used, but Im the one making the logo for him and am not so sure otherwise. An answer would be amazing and really helpful from anyone that has one. Thanks! -Liz
