Missing sound while using old versions of minecraft

I tried to go back to beta 1.7.3 but it had no sound, i tried to go back to alpha versions as well but the same problem still occurred please help I am currently using the old java based launcher(1.6.89j) as i heard it could fix this problem but it did not.
