Whenever I try to install Optifine the file comes out as a Microsoft Edge file. Is there a way to fix this?

Right click on the file and select "Open with..." and a something will pop up asking how do you want to open the file. If java is on the list, click on it and check the box "always use this app to open .jar files". Click Ok
If java does not appear on that list, scroll down and click on "look for another app on this pc" and window will pop up to navigate through files. This should pull up the Program Folder (C:\Program Files). Click on Java, then the folder in that (should be jre1.8.0_251 or something very similar), then click on the bin folder. (you should be at C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_251\bin at this point). Now, double click on the file javaw.exe. Do not click any other file, not even java.exe. The file will run and you will be able to install optifine.
If you need to run a .jar file again, right click the file and select "Open with..." and this time java should appear on the list of apps. Click java and check the box "always use this app to open .jar files". Click Ok. Now every time you need to run a .jar file you can always click on it and run it normally.
Now, if there is no Java folder in the Program Files folder, go to the folder Program Files (x86) and the java folder should be there. Follow the instructions above.

thank you, but i can't seem to find the java folder on my pc?
Did you install java somewhere else besides the default install location, which is the program files folder? If so look where it is installed. If not try reinstalling java and check both the Program Files and Program Files (x86) folders after it is done installing.
