Nee help making a (Beta 1.7.3 server)!!!

so i have been trying to make a beta 1.7.3 server and i havent had good luck.
i want to make the server beta 1.7.3 because i loved that version and i want to play it with a friend.
my problem is i get all kinds of errors like Failed to login: <html> and End of stream
i know the beta multiplayer was buggy but how do i fix this?

Please provide more details! Are you trying to set up a bukkit or vanilla server, and where are you getting the server jar from.
