Need advice on how to move a city

My friends and I have been working on a city in Minecraft that occupies 12 region files. With the upcoming adventure mode update, it is finally time to move the city from where we have been building it (far from spawn) to the center of the map so it can be the hub for all adventures on the server.

The problem is the size of the city makes it hard to move.

WorldEdit can only do a small piece of it at a time. Doing large pieces causes Minecraft to crash, even with up to 10GB of RAM allocated to it.

Renaming the region files to move it causes chunks to be missing, but seems the most straightforward way to copy it, and then fill in the missing chunks with WorldEdit.

Rebuilding it is NOT an option, it is too frigging huge.

Does anyone know of a better way to move the whole city? Perhaps an external program where I can tell it the XYZ coordinates to make a box, then the destination coordinates I want it to end up and it just moves the data?

Any feedback would be appreciated. I asked on Minecraft forums as well but any help from anywhere on how to move this would be awesome.

Moved to 'General Server Discussion and Help' as this is a general server related issue/question.
I suggest you look into McEdit. Rather powerful third party map editor.

World edit it by 1/8s parts.
