So what happended is you forgot to guard that part of your world. There are a few ways. U can go into your server properties and set the spawn protection higher and that would mean in the spawn protected area only OPS can break/build. You can also get world guard and guard it or any type of protection plugin
There are many different bukkit plugins - if you are running bukkit that is - that can probably help you with this situation! Just browse this site till you find one; http://plugins.bukkit.org or you can type it in on google and maybe someone had something similar happen to them, so they have to solution on a forum elsewhere! Hope this helps you out
