I need more memory!
Okay so it has automatically given minecraft 120MB to use, and right now it is using 110-115MB. I have done the -xmx2G and stuff, and gotten the error cannot create java machine or whatever and have done what others have said, so can anyone help? Also, I can give more info if you can tell me what info you need.
Okay, forgot to mention this as it didn't end up helping - my friend and I got 989MB of memory. It's using about 40% of it, and the usage has grown. Before it was using 110MB, now it is a lot higher, even though nothing has changed. I have tried using a 8x8 texturepack, but it didn't help. I think I am either going to need to try something else, or get a new computer altogether.

Like I said, the gpu you have is pretty garbage. Which is probably the cause. For reference, page four of this thread there's another post of mine that has a comparative benchmark score. I'd quote it but pmc isn't so elegant on a phone.
What computer are you using?
Dell Inspiron N5110.
I tried and it didn't help. The amount of allocated memory changes randomly in-game, like allocated memory can be 989 then drop to 120 but used memory will be like 130 out of 910. I did -Xmx5G and -Xmx5G -Xms5G. I'm talking to another friend, hes in college, and he says memory would not boost performance.
You put in the Xmx2G then UNCHECK THE BOX AFTER. My friend and I tested this and he had 20-30 fps and he made it Xmx5G and got 70-90.

That is too obvious. I did that before anything, and continually do it weekly as I have said before.
I have done this before, and I have copied all the info about all the things that you guys asked for. ( I forget who exactly it was. )

I reset my computer last month or so, and updated everything straight from 2011. Nothing is old, just re-updated java and stuff today to fix it. Thanks anyway!
So just to ask are your all drivers all up to date? Because i once was at a friends house and he was bragging me how his computer was laggy and well when i did few test results were horrible! 5000+ viruses on his computer and drivers not updated since 2001! Than well i gave it a shot and updated all his drivers and cleaned his PC and now it works fine even thou its old.
So my point, try what i did for my friend and tell me if it works.

I have people like killertoad, I will do fine!
Ahaha, you've got the entire Tech team of PMC here I've yet to see these guys make a mistake.
Probably a good idea. Laptops are a pain to take apart / put back together, and to replace the CPU or put in a graphics card (if there's space) you'd need to get the very core, the motherboard. Desktops are more powerful for less. Good luck!
Okay. Well, I am not going to screw with my laptop, I would rather buy a desktop anyway.
Alright, here's your problem. The GPU that comes integrated with that CPU is practically useless.
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.p ... el+HD+3000
Either you need to buy an independent GPU or replace the CPU with a different one that also has integrated graphics, but of a higher level.

From the specs you posted earlier, your laptop should easily run Minecraft on low settings at around 30-50 FPS unless your video card is complete crap. Honestly, I think that your computer may just need to be cleaned up. Download a decent free antivirus and give it a run. I see people ask for PC builds because they get fed up with their computers not running smoothly so often when a cleanup could improve performance to necessary levels. I'm not saying a new computer wouldn't be great, but I believe yours would be just fine.I have tried that, and I delete everything and clean it weekly. I have also completely wiped everything before, none of it worked.
hit windows key + r, then type in dxdiag and hit run. Go to the display panel and tell us what the name field says. This is what it says for device: Intel HD Graphics Family. For Chip Type, same thing as device name. For DAC type it is Internal. That is all it says.

I got the memory fixed, and I have 16 FPS, but I have wanted a new comp for awhile, and the 3 FPS is still really common. I will keep using this for now, but if the problem comes back and I CAN get the money, I probably will get it.
Edit- Okay, the memory keeps disappearing and re-appearing, leading to 99% of the time being 3-7 FPS

The way the Java Virtual Machine (and therefore Minecraft) allocates memory is this:
So basically your Minecraft is only giving itself a maximum of 120 MB because it currently doesn't need more than that, and is letting the rest of your computer use the rest.
Yes, I know that this isn't the main focus of this thread, but this is the cause of the confusion that led to the problem that this thread is for.
- It is given an absolute maximum heap size (amount of memory) that it is allowed to use.
- It (optionally) can be given a minimum heap size.
- It will allocate a soft maximum heap size on its own in order to have less of an impact on memory available to the rest of the system.
- Once the memory needed is more than the soft max it made, it will increase the max heap size as needed, up to the hard maximum that you set with -Xmx.

Start the Minecraft server (.jar version)
-If you have the .jar version, you will need to have a path variable set up for Java in order to start the jar version of the server. Refer to step 3 of "REQUIRED: Verify and Install the Latest Version of Java" above to set up a path variable.
To start the jar version of Minecraft on Windows, create a new file in Notepad, and paste in
(add in -d64 if your server is on a 64-bit computer using 64-bit java)
or
Save the file as startserver.bat, and place the file in the same folder as minecraft_server.jar. The .bat extension saves the file as a batch file.
Double click startserver.bat, and the Minecraft server will run.

What is your budget?
$500 Canadian
Where do you live? If in the US, do you have a nearby Microcenter?
Canada
What is included in the budget?
I have the mouse, keyboard, and OS.
Will you be overclocking?
I do not think so, unless it is needed.
If you are reusing parts list them here.
OS, Mouse, Keyboard
What OS do you want?
Have one..
Any specific case preferences?
Color: Blue, like a nice light blue, or metallic or something.
Any other special features that you want in the build?
If its more bang for my buck, throw it in, as long as it doesn't go far over the budget.

What is this computer going to be used for?
List what you will be doing with your computer.
What is your budget?
Include amount and currency.
Where do you live? If in the US, do you have a nearby Microcenter?
Your country lets us know what sites you can order from. If you have a nearby Microcenter they have some great in-store only deals that you can take advantage of.
What is included in the budget?
Things like the tower, the OS, peripherals and monitors.
Will you be overclocking?
Overclocking will require different hardware than a non-overclocking build so we need to know this.
Will you be reusing any parts?
If you are reusing parts list them here.
What OS do you want?
Say which OS you want or say if you already have a copy of one.
Any specific case preferences?
Size, color, etc.
Any other special features that you want in the build?
Stuff like an SSD, large hard drive, RAID, and wifi

No. Sorry. I am thinking of just making/buying another computer, but I don't even know where to start. I just basically want to be able to play Minecraft with 60 or whatever FPS. I have the OS, Keyboard, and mouse, and probably a monitor. I just need the build. I know you guys ( Killertoad etc ) build computer all the time, I have seen them. Any ideas? IF I can get the money I would have about $500 ( Not much more ) to spend. I am not looking for Skyrim with ultra settings and mods, mainly because I don't have it and don't plan on it, but don't refer to it. I just want MC with 60 or whatever frames. The monitor will be small so I don't need it to project over a 30 inch screen. Thanks
It's funny because I am using a laptop and I do not believe those can be modified.
This is all I could find
System Model: Dell Inspiron N5110
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2430M CPU @ 2.40 GHz ( 4 CPUs )
Memory: 6144M RAM

Can you not find the GPU?

False. 32-bit Java can only handle about 1 GB of memory (closer to 1.4 GB IIRC).
[deleted]
Yeah, I think he's getting confused with how 32 bit operating systems only support 4GB's.
I never get why people want to have 300+ fps? I am happy with my 60 fps not more not less, its not like i need more.
Ikr. Most monitors have a refresh rate of 60 or 120 MHz, so anything above that won't make a difference.
Actually, the person who told me was on PMC, and on a post asking if it my laptop would run MC or if I am trying to do something it can't. You posted there too, and nobody disagreed. I will go and try and find the info, brb
Still can't find them....
It was an excuse not to download it. My friend tells me its a virus, and why download something to do something I can already do without it? And, it is a 3 year old dell inspiron laptop but has good enough specs to run it at medium settings fine, someone checked for me.
Is your friend the same person that said it should run it fine? No offense, he doesn't sound like he know a whole lot if he is calling it a virus.
You can do dxdiag, and find it that way. But it's alot more information

Oh, lol. But it's not a virus. I've been using it for years. I understand if you prefer not to download anything, though.
Already tried that.
You are probaly using 32bit java, install 64bit java and than try to add more than 1 GB of ram.
I'm not downloading anything, my computer is crappy as it is, and I can't download much. I have gotten the specs before but I forget how.

Wait... you just called your computer crappy, yet you're expecting it to run Minecraft smoothly. o_0

Google "Speccy" and download it. It's by Piriform.

You can download this program called "speccy" and it'll tell us everything we need to know.
Edit, woops, didn't see it posted above.
