Hello Planet MineCraft, I do hope I am placing this in the proper place.
I am a huge fan of SkyBlock. So after playing on several Servers and finding errors and corrections I would have made, I started my quest to build my very own Server. My goal was to start one on my laptop making it 10GB. (My ultimate goal being building a Dedicated Server with 64GB of RAM.
So, I got my plugins I got everything how I thought I would have liked it. Being kind of stupid I didn't ask my dad first, (I'm not super young but parents pay for internet and power.) He also had an idea for a Server for my little brothers for a game they play. (I'm getting to the help part soon!!) He decided against it when a friend told him that is was unsafe to Port Forward.
After looking around on the interwebz for any positive information about Forwarding 25565. I've pieced together that's not 100% safe but not that dangerous either. Hamachi isn't gonna cut it, it didn't work on my computer sadly. So Planet Minecraft I beg for your help to clue me (my dad) in on the risks and benefits of Port Forwarding. Hopefully my requests get fulfilled soon, so I can proceed with my Server Owning idea.

(I also plan on hosting little lets play adventures, which is another use for my server.)

No he has changed the default log ins, I wouldn't be stupid enough to change it anyways. Also have gotten/will be getting al my plugins from the Bukkit Website no where else.
Selecting specific ports has a very low risk of attack. In fact I would say you have more risk accidentally installing a virus than getting attacked from forwarding a port.
Also, I would venture a guess that your Dad did not change the default admin password on your router and you could probably just login and setup your port forward......it is kind of dishonoring your parents though....so proceed at your own risk.
