Ok, I'm trying to set up a server using my Windows 7 64-bit machine. I am using a Linksys E3000 attached to my cable modem. I can't seem to connect to it even after forwarding a port and such. When I check ipconfig it tells me one ip address but when I use the web it gives me another ip. So far none of my ip's are working to let me onto my server I am trying to run. I have no mods or plug-ins either.
I want to create a server for a close-knit community to build and play in. Mainly because either the servers I can log in to are full of griefers or there is no room ro build anything because all the space is taken by previous constructions. This game is a blast to play with others.
Just looking for some help to set up my server.
Also how do you update the server software to reflect the current build?

ok if your setting up the server your ip that you port forward is the one in ip config that is listed for the i pv4.
the one on whats my ip is the one that others use to connect to your server( you will use the one you portforwarded. As for keeping things up to date you just gotta keep checking back in to see if they released a newer version of what your using and then install that one to your server. If you rather though my server is new still. I have server running experience and we have free spaces. you and your friends can come play with us. just click my name look at my servers and its the one named Trenity. if you need more help with your server just message me on here and i will help you.

Bukkit is the best server software (For Plugins.)
Port is usually the number 25565.
So it should look like this ...
(IP ADDRESS HERE):25565

^This will help with some of the basic server setup and commands
You update your server build from http://minecraft.net or http://bukkit.org if you are running the bukkit plugin server version.

Ok, I had the same problem... this may confuse you but type in on google ''what is my ip'' ....and there you go.. trust me just do it.
