Need Some Help Getting My Server Busy.
Hello everyone,
Please don't think of this as a server advertisement thread, because that's not what I'm trying to do. I know where those threads belong and how to manage all of that..
I have a factions server that has been online for quite some time. I have worked very hard ensuring that there are decent plugins, features, a good looking spawn, a good looking website, rewards for voting, etc, however the server just isn't gaining much popularity.
The server has had a lot of in and out traffic, people that come in, then leave. Obviously I want people to stick around, make a faction, team up with some people and have a good time. I belong on a lot of websites like Minestatus, Planet Minecraft (Obviously) among some others. I do have some money for paid advertising, but what I'm seeing is around $500, which is just too much for how small my network is right now.
I'm looking to expand, obtain new players and good players. It seems like everyone that joins just asks "Are you the owner? Can I have staff?" when we don't need staff, we need players.
What are some things you guys can recommend to make my server more popular? You can see the PMC Server thread here:

Not to copy the previous guys, I will give you few important things:
- Make it original. don't run yet another factions/eco/mcmmo/shops server. There are bigger ones and better ones like that.
- Try to be a positive person. Talk to new players, don't be bossy, or just simply not nice.
- Have someone who stands out of staff team and does something funny, entertaining the players. Also, don't forget about events.
- Appearance. Chat must be nice. It's the first thing people look at when they join. Make it clear, nice, and smooth. DO NOT use white color. White should take no place on the chat. Signs - avoid them like liquid metal. Write nice essentials /rules config, with colors and formatting, and use WorldGuard 'greeting' flag. It prints out a message when someone walks over a specific region. It might be very useful, and much better then signs.
- Ranks. Don't get fooled, this is one of the main ingredients of a good server. Make an attractive ranking system, profit.
I hope I helped,
nik

1. I also have a server and i would recommend posting on as many website as you can. Also don't advertise on other server no one will join and your server will get bad reputation.
2. Good staff.Make sure your staff is good and polite and doesn't insult or be rude to players.Do anything to help players and make your server as enjoyable as possible.
3. Reputation.Make sure to post YouTube videos about your server constantly and show off cool features that other server don't have
4. Overall server. Make sure to have on main topic and not a ton of things on a not extremely popular server because if you only have 10 people on and 2 are in sg 1 in creative 3 in factions and the rest just observing no one will stay on for very long.
5. Spawn/First look.Make sure to have PIZZAZZ near and in the spawn to grab players attention and make them stay on.Add just the information necessarily on the signs and use lots of bright colors.
Hope i helped
Good Luck

Some things that help to get players to stay, is give them something to stay for, first appearances makes a huge difference, you must keep a certain level of professionalism (make it not look like some 12 year old is running it), make sure you always have staff online, otherwise it looks like it's poorly managed.
After taking a quick look around the server, this a few things that could help...
A lot of players tend to be very judgmental on servers based on first appearances. When I first joined the server, I was looking at a wall of signs that say Info.. This was quite bland in my opinion.
As i walked out of the spawn building, i noticed that it was a really nice build, it was a nice.. relaxing spawn. Then I just saw a lot of signs that direct you to the wilderness, however. But I chose to ignore that and wanted to see what the server had to offer, and I went into empty building after empty building, (a lot of walking) then I realized that the spawn town was just empty... most the houses didn't really have any purpose other than appearances.
Effective Spawns can be some of the most difficult things to make because there are a lot of things to take into account:
Also for some of the more mature players, seeing people talk with stuff like... <*Stoners ... is VERY unappealing.
Another thing, try and make everything in chat look a little better, more appealing.
i.e. change chat's and announcement's format/colors
(I was just typing as I thought of stuff)
(Everything I said is stuff that matters in MY opinion, may not make a big difference)

- It needs to look good
- If you have a building, it should have a purpose other than just to look good
- You don't want to have to make players walk a long distance for anything
- You don't want players to have to read too much
- It needs to be informative
- It needs to be small.
- Builds are nice, but not all builds are good for spawns

I really appreciate you taking the time to stop in and have a look around and give me some tips. There are some buildings that matter at spawn, such as the Blacksmith, The Marketplace, the Library and even the church. They are just kind of spaced out a bit. A lot of it is to look good, as you've mentioned. We've put a lot of work into the spawn, however maybe we need to move things around a little bit. It's still a work in progress, so there's still a lot to do.
Again, I really appreciate your feedback on our server.

Yeah it takes a while to get things started..but if you keep at it you'll find success!
Appreciate the advice guys! I've pretty much done what you've suggested already. Things are just slow, I suppose.
I agree with presentmaster3 ,Be nice welcome them and say no and say be nice and help others or something and they will stay.Hope that helps!
Hmm, I have a server and I always need new players too, and I agree it's hard to get people to stay. There really isn't a foolproof way to get players to join and stay, but i recommend a couple things:
1) Post/bump/ping your server daily on as many sites as possible.
2) Make sure you have a banner and good pictures of your server.
3) Be on when new players join, and be friendly. When they ask for staff, say something like "No, but we need loyal players, so you might get picked for staff if you play a lot!"
Good luck, hope this helps
