Need some help on Home Hosted Server

My friend is hosting a server. They are new and dont really know anything about plugin configs or anything. I want to be able to use his console and file access from my laptop, but he hosts it from his computer. IS there a way i can connect to his files and edit them over the internet

Yes look into FileZilla FTP server. That is the software he will need on his computer. You will need the FileZilla FTP client or something similar.
That will allow you to connect and edit the files.
