Need to test mods as regular user

I have a server setup and have mods installed but I want to be able to check them as a regular player, not as me with owner rights. This is mostly to verify permissions and other building mods work like I want them to.
Will I need to actually purchase an alternate Minecraft account to do this?
Suggestions?

Generally, when I test perms, I'll either remove all the perms from myself (might be as simple as removing OP, might need a few rank changes), ask someone to do the testing (definitely can have advantages) or set the server to offline mode and use a third party launcher to make a testing "account".
