Hello everyone, Minecraft (and PC gaming) newbie here. I joined this site to ask a couple questions about two issues I'm having with Minecraft. Hopefully some of you can help.
Note: I play offline ALL the time.
The first one is really simple. I built an average sized house but enemy mobs keep spawning inside it. It is completely lit with not only torches but glowstone all around as well. I find it annoying to come back every night and being surprised by a creeper around a corner ready to blow up and mess up my stuff. There WAS a cave system right underneath my house filled with mobs (I would sometimes hear them through the ground) and I even took the trouble of filling that up with cobblestone. Why? I have no idea, I just thought maybe their spawn down there was making them spawn in the surface inside my house too.
Anyways, the first question is how do the mob spawn mechanics work? Is there a specific reason why mobs keep spawning inside my house that I can fix or do I just have to pick a different place to build a house? Even though it took me a while to build it, I dont really mind doing it all over again somewhere else but if there is a way I can stop them from spawning inside my current house I would like to find out how.
The second one is a bit more complicated. On a separate save, I was doing a large project that I had already dumped quite several hours on it. Except for the remaining 60-70% of it I needed to flatten out large area and doing it manually was taking just way too much. I know nothing about PC gaming and mods have always eluded me but I went ahead and downloaded MCEdit as per someone's suggestion. I tried it out on a dummy world save by deleting blocks and seeing if it really worked in the real game and I had no problems so I went into the Project Save and started flattening the area by getting rid of the hills and whatnot. I only deleted about a parameter of about 20-30 blocks at first to see how it would look. Note: I did NOT delete chunks, I was very sure I was only deleting blocks. I saved and went into the game and when I flew over the area where I had just deleted the blocks, the game crashed.
Now, I cant even get into that save because the moment it crashed it saved my location over that blocks-deleted area. I think deleting those blocks is what caused my game to crash, because when I went in, everything worked fine. I looked around and whatnot. It was ONLY when I headed over the 20-30 block area I had deleted that the game suddenly crashed. And that's where the location of my guy is at the moment, so whenever I boot up the save it just completely crashes and exits.
I don't know if it will help, but here is the report:
So, my question: is my save salvageable? Is there a way I can fix this so it doesn't crash anymore and can play in this world again? It would really suck if I lose it for good after so many hours.
Anyhoo, thank you for reading and thanks in advance to anyone who responds with suggestions! I'll be back soon to check and reply to any comments that ask me for additional info.

In order to rid yourself of mobs, press f3 while in Minecraft which will open up a status HUD type thing. On the left side look for "bl:" (block lighting). It will have a number next to it ranging from 0 to 13 with 13 being the highest light level and 0 the lowest. You should walk around your house and place torches wherever the light level is 7 or lower as this is where hostile mobs are able to spawn. In order to avoid passive mobs from spawning you should make sure you have no grass or leaves on the floor of your house (and possibly make a half slab floor if that doesn't work).
As for terrain editing, MCEdit is pretty good but it can be a little difficult to use. I'd recommend trying out WorldEdit. I find it to be a lot more reliable (and useful as well).
Hope that helps!

Welcome to minecraft and PMC!
About the crash, what version of minecraft are you using (or which snapshot if you are using one)?

Welcome to PMC, pretty sure your issue has been resolved by now though so no need for me to assist.
You can make a flat world by changing the World Type to superflat
i cant help with the mcedit question, but on the mob question, if you press f3 on your keyboard a bunch of numbers will pop up, look for the one that is next to rl: and see if that number stays above 7 as you walk throughout each block of your house, if it does, idk why they are spawning, but if it isnt staying above 7, add more light
I'll take a crack at the game crashing situation; as you mentioned using MCEdit to clear a section to save time.
First, good thinking on the MCEdit. This program is awesome and you should most definitely fight back. Don't let it discourage you because once your ideas grow and multiply, MCEdit will be one of your sharpest tools. Second, you were smart in only trying a small area first; clearly you're no dummy in terms of how external editors can potentially impact the actual game files operating normally... dem sum'bitches.
So. I would start by double checking that MCEdit and your version of Minecraft are as updated as is currently out. That seems obvious, but you never know. Next step, whether you update or not, would be to fire up MCEdit, load your questionable level, and proceed with one of two steps as follows:
Option A)
The MCEdit keyboard shortcut (which you should familiarize yourself with) for moving the player is 7. Press once, and the pop-up menu on the left will show an option to move the player. Or to move the player world spawn location, press 8 once, and you should see the spawn block attached to your cursor for placement.
Option B)
This option is probably more important for the editing instructions, just so you have a feel for the basics. Make sure you have the Select tool at the ready (Keyboard 1) and just the same way you selected and area to delete, you can select the object you have already built. (As you hover the cursor over each of the six faces of your selection box, you can drag the walls out or in to adjust the size of your selected box.) Select the whole build you want to KEEP, and hit Ctrl+C just like a normal Copy command. In the upper right you will see a lil' window pop up with two buttons: Save and Delete. These lil' windows are stackable in-program schematics, just like you can download on them internets. Click Save to backup your build because if the level file itself is corrupt, we can just move the build; hell with the level. This is the joy MCEdit. Clicking Delete will delete it only from the in-program temp memory. So once you save what you need, load up a new/different world in MCEdit, and fly around until you've found where you want to insert the schematic you just saved. Press the Keyboard 6. In the window that opens, navigate to the schematic you saved, and open 'her up. Click pretty close to where you need the build to be placed, and then use the Nudge buttons on the left to fine tune it. Press Enter, or click the Import button. Save! Often and always! MCEdit is a little wacky sometimes...
Hope this helps. Message me with anything else, friend. Happy building. ..... . .... watch out for them creepersssssss. . . .... .. . . . ..

Aethroz its called gamerules but you were close :3
Also if you don't want hostile mobs to spawn you can set the difficulty to peacful with the command /difficulty 0 or in the options
Personally: No idea. Seems like you are doing everything fine. You should post pics so that somebody a bit more experienced with MC spawning rules can help you. Also, in your original post, you should include what version you are using, and what mods you are using, if any. Include your difficulty too, just incase.
Have you messed with or edited "gamerules"?
Thanks Kiyoshi, had a massive brainfart

I do have my house completely lit. It's just two small rooms with plenty of torches and a larger room with torches around it a few glowstone for good measure. The outside walls and roof are also covered with torches. If needed, I can post some pictures of it when I get home. I forgot to mention that passive mobs have spawned a couple times as well. I've come home to find chickens just roaming around. I've made sure there is not a single hole and my doors only open with a lever. So I dont really know what's up with that.

1: Welcome to PMC.
2: As long as there is no darkness, mobs should not be spawning inside your house. Make sure there is no dark area, and no holes at all. Also, make sure your doors are closed, and there are no holes in the roof.
3: No idea, but somebody should be right over to help ya with that.
