Many people join an awesome Minecraft Multiplayer server that they absolutely LOVE, so they want to become mod/op! But HOW?! That's my case. I looove a server and I really want to be op, but the admins are super busy trying to get everybody to vote on PMC and Minestatus, and trying to upgrade the spawn, so they barely notice me! I mean, come on!
So, I've come up with a plan.
To get op, you obviously need to be playing on the server for some time. This time depends on how new the server is. If the server's a new one, they'll accept mods faster. If it's been up for a while and has a lot of people playing on it, it's harder to get noticed. So, the newer the server is, the better!
Then, obviously, you need to help out! Examples: Welcome the new players, offer to help the admins/mods, suggest new awesome plugins and stuff that needs improving, build awesome buildings (like a mob arena).
So, basically, raise your reputation!
In my case, the server that I love is a faction server, so you gotta try to make a strong faction, not just some crappy solo one.
Also, interact with the players! Say nice things, don't verbally harm anybody, and make friends. The more friends you have, the more friends there are to say nice things about you to the admins, and recommend you for op.
Ahh, and you have to nice to the admins, too. And the server overall. For example, if their server is on PMC, you gotta say extra nice things about them, like:
See? You have to be UBER nice!
Hmmm, what else...? Oh, yeah, what ever you do, DO NOT ASK FOR OP UNTIL YOU DID ALL OF THE THINGS ABOVE. Because that'll diminish your chances of becoming op by like 60%. If you do that before you've gained the admins' trust, say goodbye to any chances of you becoming op. D:
And if you do all of the recommended things, you'll be filling out a moderator application in no time!

The staff is super friendly, the players are fair and fight well, the factions are super powerful and organized, the spawn is very well designed, and the idea of drop parties to encourage votes for the server is brilliant!
