I tried to download optifine but it told me what file I wanted to open it with, I wasn't sure so I clicked on Internet Explorer. Now when I try to open it it asks me what I want to do with Optifine _1.12.1_HD_U_C5, and it doesn't work, help?
I'm using Windows 8

Yeah I've tried to open it with the java and javaw file but it still opens a cmd screen for a millisecond.
really strange.... hmm, at last you can download new fresh file for 1.12.1 and install it in proper forge version.
as i see OptiFine 1.12.1_HD_U_C5 is compantible with forge 2446.
And small tip - it would be nice if you click "reply button" instead of posting new comment - The user will see your reply in his notifications :)

I don't really understand what you're trying to tell me to do?
ps. Thanks for the tip!

I'm really confused after little thinking - how is that possible that you can install forge, but no optifine
(they're both jar installers)
By the instructions above i wanted you to install forge 1.12.1 version 2446 using jar installer and then put new dowloaded jar file of optifine into mods folder..... in my opinion it should work...
By the way, what browser are you using? :P
Just to be sure, here is forge official site: https://files.minecraftforge.net/maven/net/minecraftforge/forge/index_1.12.1.html
and here is optifine site:
http://optifine.net/downloads

Have you tried open this file with java?
Optifine jar file is an installer used to be opened default by java.
If not, right-click on file > open with... and select java(if it's not listed, then click "more applications" and at the end "Find another application on this computer" then go to program files folder > java > jre<version of java> > bin and select java or javaw file)
As always : Hope that my instructions is clear and will help you :)

I ended up making the Optifine into a Jar file and putting it into the mods folder but every time I try and open the actual Optifine up it opens up a cmd screen for about a millisecond, I used the slo-mo on my phone to find out what it said:
Error: Could not find or load main class C:/Users/James/AppData/Roaming/.minecraft (couldn't read more)
next line: ft/mods/OptiFine_1.12.1_HD_U_C5.jar
Also when I try to open up forge (now that Optifine is in the mods folder) it says "An unexpected issue occurred and the game has crashed. We're sorry for the inconvenience.

Yeah I have but when I did it asked me what type of file I wanted it to be and I didn't know so I tried a few and none of them worked so I ended up leaving it as an internet explorer file, Any ideas how to turn it into a jar file?
Either try dropping it into the mods folder as it is or follow the steps I provided.
Optifine isn't a jar file tho, its an internet explorer file, sorry if I'm being stupid.
It's meant to be a jar file...? Have you tried downloading it from the official Optifine website?
Alright I've downloaded forge but Optifine still opens with internet explorer, how can I change that?
Have you tried dropping the Optifine jar into the mods folder and starting up a version of Forge?
Internet explorer is a cancerous application to open anything with, let alone a jar file.
You need to download and install forge, and then put the optifine file into the mods folder in the .minecraft directory. Then run forge through the launcher.

Adding onto what Nitwick said: don't use Internet Explorer. Period.
But instead of using Forge - you can run the jar file from a .bat file. Create one, any name, and insert the line: (sorry if this doesn't work though, it's been a long time since I've tried this).
java - jar Optifine _1.12.1_HD_U_C5.jar
(Or whatever you named the jar)
It should run. I had a similar issue but now I can run jar files with that tool fine.
