Panorama without screenshots?

I'm making a texture pack, and I want to change the panorama in the background. The problem is that I want to use a custom image/png and not minecraft screenshots. When I plop it in the folder it isn't 3d and just fills the screen with squares of my image. I've looked on a few different forums and can't find anything. Halp.

For panorama You need 6 images for each side of main menu 'cube'
I have no hands on experience with this myself, but... did you make sure to use the exact same image resolution and screendepth? So: 256x256x24BPP?
