This error can (not always) be due to incorrect parameters in the java startup line.
If you are using the Vanilla launcher, then click on your installations tab, then put your mouse over the version you are having problems with. To the right of the green 'Play' button will be a box with 3 dots, click on that and choose the 'Edit' option.
Click on the 'More Options', then scroll down to see the 'jvm arguments' line. It will have something similar to this :
-Xmx2G -XX:+UnlockExperimentalVMOptions -XX:+UseG1GC -XX:G1NewSizePercent=20 -XX:G1ReservePercent=20 -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=50 -XX:G1HeapRegionSize=32M
The first thing to check is that each parameter only has 1 minus sign ( - ) at the beginning. If they do, then for quickness, delete everything except the -Xmx2G parameter and see if it works with just that.
