When posting a new map there is a section that says categories, but I'm been confused on what is what... I think the maps I have are in the wrong ones and I hope someone can tell me. All my maps are zoos with animals, which category would they belong to? I'm guessing I need to change them all to complex, but not sure if that's what it means.

What scot says is very true. There isnt a list as far as we know that has a guideline on which category means what. So its just up for interpretation. And a map can fit multiple categories, like your map can fit in different ones.
It could be simply a land structure map, this category gets used a lot for any type of map thats just some build on land.
It could be a landscaping/ environment, im sure you made loads of cool area's for the different animals
It could be complex like you said, many use these for larger cities or maps
It could even be educational... cuz well its a zoo
So just pick the one you think fits the most, no one will call you out on it

You aren't the only one (and not just with maps)…
Even where the catagories are fairly clear, something can easily fir more than one (e.g. Redstone & Minecart & Landstructure would all fit a sorting system with hopper minecarts)

Until/unless that sort of thing becomes available, probably best to rely on the tags for steering traffic (which will stand you in good stead in any case)
