Preventing spiders from spawning in mob grinders,

I made a basic mob grinder on a server, you know, 21 blocks tall, 18 block wide square box at the top. It works fine, but I want to stop spiders from spawning in it. They often stay on the roof and don't end up being killed for a long time. Does anyone know a method to stop them from spawning so that other mobs can spawn in place of them to make the farm more efficient?

I think making the spiders unable to crawl the walls would be a better solution? Can they climb on closed trapdoors
By using different blocks like slabs for instance, you can disable where mobs can spawn. Also by using lighting in strategic ways can also stop mobs from spawning in particular places.
