Hello, I was planning on building a second dedicated computer for a minecraft server. I was wondering which would be the best processor to handle 3-4 servers with about 20-40 people on them. These servers would be mini-game servers, so not a lot of plugins involved.

For a CPU I reccomend you get atleast a minimum a 4 core. For top end get a 8 core processor. The GPU I reccomend you get the weakest cause your not going to use a server PC for gaming anyways. For RAM you should get a minimum of 8 GB of ram.I purely reccomend 32 GB.For storage make sure to get 1TB of har drive.Get a normal one if your on a budget. The fastest hard drive on the market right now is the velociraptor hard drive.NEVER go SSD on a server PC cause it's going to cost you alot.On a cooling you shouldn't use the stock since it's not that effective.Get a good cooling unit.I reccomend a water cooling unit since a server PC will run all day long.On motherboard it's basically get the cheapest one that fits the requirements.

Why should I not go with a SSD, Because I've been reading that the new gen. SSD's have been corrected with the Read/Write performance affecting the life of the drive.
P.S. Any quad/8 core in particular I don't want Amd do to thread performance and power consumption.

Usually building high-quality computers may not be the best choice for hosting, because there's a chance your server won't get popular, which means little to no donations. I suggest you use professional host (such as mcprohosting.com) for servers. They are cheap and cost-effective, yet you won't lose too much money if your server "fails".

I already have a high end desk which I host most of these servers, and our community is growing very fast with little advertisement. Also I got about 120$ in donations already thanks to wonderful players. Plus I build them myself to save money.

Dont get the "cheapest motherboard", and get a 512gb SSD...

your hosting from home.... have you considered your upload speed.

3-4 servers at 20-40 players online.

Lets say you have 4 servers with 25 people on all the time, thats a constant 100 players online, dont forget you still have to have your share of the UL speed for you to be able to game properly. Think wisely, your money could easily goto waste

Don't use SSD cause they cost alot.

EDIT:A 128 gb ssd cost about a 1TB HDD.

They cost alot, but just for servers..... You could easily store 4 servers on a 64GB SSD, with PLENTY of BACKUPS for all the servers, also giving that extra 'umph' to the server, and if the system ever crashed, or got shut down, it would be a really quick restart, especially if using Linux as a OS.

i have just noticed, that 'one' has simply not given a awnser to the question, for having everything we have talked about in above reply ect, i would recommend using a MID-HIGH end I5 CPU Ones such as:

- i5 2400

and if you can 'splash' more cash then maybe consider the I5 3570k, not for OC but as it is a strong cpu, and you always do have that OC choice.

take a look at http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html try to find the area of a I5 2400 and just browse around that area on the list, it also tells you their price aswell!

The OS would quickly take half of the sapce on a 128GB SSD.
