What exactly does a server developer do? I don't understand what exactly is their contribution to server. Could someone explain it to me?

Some developers will make custom plugins for the server (typically are paid positions), and there are other "developers", which really aren't developers, but more like a person that adds plugins and configures them (which in fact, is really easy to do after you learn a bit about it).
