As soon as i have finished my entry to the latest build competition http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... -update-1/ (thats it so far) i am starting work on my server. my idea is to make a survival factions server but with a very community based twist.. i plan on spending at least a month setting up a massive detailed medieval spawn city and several others dotted around.. the idea is to create a world much like what real medieval briton would have been like! I really want to create something that will make people stop and go wow i want to be a part of this!
I will run factions, economy (or something similar), some sort of jobs mod (i need to look into that further) and a few other mods (but i wont overload it). I will create a website with a donation page however donations will be strictly just for paying for a server host and website hosting costs and improving the server rather than lining my own pocket.
One thing i have noticed about servers is the way staff ranks seem to be given out way to readily to people who joined maybe a 2-3 weeks ago.. I beleive that to create a sucsessful server you have to be able to deligate but to a trusted few not giving staff ranks to everyone. I also beleive taht less low down ranks also benifits as there is less argueing over things like 'ive been here longer how come they have been ranked up' etc etc..
All the points i make above come from about 2 years experience in helping run servers and coowning one. the owners have had differnt ideas on how to run a server and tbh they have never worked out too great!. The name for my server will be 'Lemuria' which is named after the first server i ever played that shut down over a year a go...
well please let me know what you think to what i have said above and what you would like to see in a server! also if this sounds like something you would like to be a part of once it comes out feel free to sub and check it out once i have uploaded it..

well tbh ill give em a go i geuss saving money is always useful ! especially when I dont have a particularly reliable source of income (i dont see any reason why i wont be able to pay but you never know)
They are very reliable. There's not much chance of them going bust anytime soon. Redstone is more expensive and I've heard a ton of stories about them having bad services. I searched for a while before I came upon exodus, and they have very good reviews. I haven't had any problems and all the staff are very helpful.
ive had experiece with redstone before and i know they work welll! thats why im still inclined to go with them... you know go with what you know!
are they reliable tho? i dont wanna be in a situation where th host goes bust and closes down the servers or somthing like that???
with 1.45gb you wouldn't get 32 players without a substantial amount of lag. And add on top of that the use of plugins you're looking at about 10-15 players at the most without lag. Plus take into account that 1.3 now requires better hardware and even with decent amount of ram/not many plugins, anymore than about 10 players, everybody will be noticing lag.
I could recommend you a host which is cheaper and you'd be able to run a slightly better server with less money. I've been using them for about a month now and have had no problems. http://exodushosting.net/minecraft.php

£12 a month won't support many players/plugins. How much ram are you going to purchase with £12?
Actually, 12 quid is around $20-25 which would in fact get you a moderately well sized server, especially one that's just starting off.

yeh true but tbh i can afford (£12 approx) to run it without donors but i would rather have money coming in to pay for incase i run into finacial difficultys or something ygm?
If you're trying to setup a server there are other things you should focus on. A decent server costs a fair bit, you want to be getting players as quickly as possible.
ok ive had an idea i would quite like some feedback on (no stealing please) how about i attempt to recreate a large part of medieval london (as much as possible) that gives it a more original edge as (as far as im aware) there isnt anything like this out there) players will then be able to either live and work in london or move out of the city and create a small holding or town someplace else! what you guys think?
Good luck trying to recreate Medieval london. I've built A LOT on my server with a load of people, we couldn't build a recreation of medieval london. If you want to spend weeks on end building it then go for it

If you need help with plugins I've been running a server for a while now and have subsequently become pretty adept with plugins. If you need someone to configure PermissionsEX and/or other plugins then I could quite easily do that for you. Come check out my server if you want. You'll just have to look under my submissions.

i plan on getting a staff member (preferably who is on ALOT) to be like in charge of perms as i want more or less everything protecting yeh im gunna get world edit of course and world guard.. logblock and plugins like that lag like hell tbh!

Hey Being on some sorta Good servers, Make it Pvp and Anti greif, get world guard, world edit, essentials, PermissionsEX, get loyal and trusty Admins and staff, fore a anti greif get the plugin Called Log or Coreprotect! they help find the greifers!!!!!!!
Maybe a shop plugin, those are always good. A specific rule bored, hack protector, especialy against nodus, xray and flying

I'm great with plugins I could help you setup permissions worldedit and everything like that and if there is not a plugin I know I will learn it very quickly. Of course I'd do all this for a spot as an admin.

good to hear peopple sound keen tbh i tend to prefer to build (or at least get things going) on my own due to the fact i have a habit of mapping things out in my head as i build lol. but by the time it comes to filling in houses i will probablly need some help! no promises tho

Also highly suggest you have iconomy and chest shops those plugins always are cool on factions servers

thanks, can u send me the link to the guys site (put it in this thread) i am probablly going to use redstone server host as i have had experience with them before but i am open to other ideas yeh chestshop is good problem is it can lag quite badly sometimes but ill see how it runs im still on the fence about chestshop!
hmm i've never had a problem with chest shops. This host will give you more ram for your money www.cheapestminecraftservers.com and you can control your server from your ipod or android and stuff like that.
so would it be better too have several maps for differnt things?

Sounds like a great idea i wouldn't mind helping with redstone if you needed help when you start it hope you make the server =)
hmm bacon is pretty much in the game already?? and as far as im aware neither car or helicpter mod runs very well!!
