watch this tutorial it'll help out visually also you can make extra folders so it wont mess up your original version you use

Download the latest version of optifine for 1.9(+).
Once installed , Launch the profile optifine.
Navigate to options > Video Settings > Shaders.
From there you can enable shaders and customize things to your liking.
