Since when did attacking with an axe -2 durability?
I thought this was a change added with the 1.9 combat update, but I loaded into a SP 1.8.8 world and tested it out and it was the same there. For how long has it been like this?

It always did. An axe was orignally a tool, so it took least durability damage from breaking its intended block: wood. As is with attacking with a pickaxe, it takes more damage because your supposed to use it on stone and minerals. The only majpr change to it was that it deals more damage in 1.9 because well, um, wouldn't it hurt more to be hit by an axe than a sword?
