Hello! I recently built this slime farm on a SMP server and I am rarely getting slimes spawning. There are four layers, each with 3 blocks in between. There's water at the bottom so the slimes shouldn't be taking damage. Each platform is 17 x 17 in a slime chunk. The falling spaces are 3 blocks, which should be enough for them to fall down into the water. I haven't lit up many of the caves around the area. It's lit up with Jack o' Lanterns. I am going AFK 25 blocks away from the 17 x 17 platform.
Should I post some pictures? Couldn't figure out how so I went to imgur to post them, and nothing has even come close to uploading yet.

There are 2 reasons why you are having low spawns in your farm. One would be the unlit area around the farm itself, there is alot more spawnable area outside the farm than in it,so mobs spawn outside, and take up the mob cap.I found that lighting up atleast 70-80% of the spawnable area outside gets the thing running, for really good rates you would need 99% or so of the area lit, that is when slime farms start to run crazy. The other reason would be that it is built on a server. If there are any other people on the server while you are AFKing at your farm, rates will drastically plummet.
It is because there is a global mob cap hardcoded into the game,so each player basically "shares" the mobs with other players until the number of them hits the mob cap.So for example, even if you have a huge perimeter all lit up,if another player is on,he/she most likely doesnt have a lit up area as well,so plenty of mobs will spawn around that player, leaving you with less mobs overall.
TL;DR Light up alot of the area, and try AFK-ing when there is less players online
