Dose anyone know if Snapshot 17w06a it stable for servers? My smp group is pushing for a server update but I don't want to update the server if the snapshot is gonna screw something up.

You probably wouldnt want to anyway, nobody plays snapshot servers, id stick to release versions until the snapshots are stable and released
Snapshots are not recommended for servers, I'm afraid. As said above, they are unstable and could corrupt your world. I have seen people use snapshots for servers, but my answer is no: don't use them. It's safer to wait for 1.12 to come out before using a buggy snapshot.
Let me quote Mojang for a sec.
"To get snapshots, open your launcher and press the "New Profile" button. Call it "snapshots" and check the box saying "Enable experimental development snapshots" and save. To switch to the normal version, you can select it in the dropdown at the bottom left corner of the launcher. Back up your world first or run the game on in a different folder (See the "new profile" dialog).
Snapshots can corrupt your world, please backup and/or run them in a different folder from your main worlds."
